Description
Ruta Pehuenche is a program with modalities of 3, 5 or 8 days.
Day 1
The local guide will receive visitors in the morning in Curarrehue square to welcome and present the program. They will move walking to Trawupeyum Intercultural Village. A museum guide will make a presentation about the life of the Mapuche people in this territory, music, community, ceremony and the daily life of a people with a very lively and present culture.
After the visit to the museum, you will go to the access to the path to the Trapial viewpoint. This route crosses a forest of the low zones of the mountain range called “Always Green”. Copihue, Olivillo, Hazelnuts and a wide range of endemic species are present in the walk. After 45 minutes of walking, you will reach a viewpoint over the Trapial lagoon.
Lunch will be held in the restaurant of Anita Epulef, a leading Mapuche cook, who will offer a menu based on local products from the orchards and fruits of native forests, rescuing ancestral recipes from her family.
In the afternoon the program includes a guided visit to an orchard of medicinal plants by a doctor with ancestral knowledge. The tour continues through Walüngmapu, on the banks of the Trankurra River, a community space managed by the Walüng community, where a ñaña will receive them in the ruka to offer a traditional craft workshop on Mapuche loom or vegetable fiber.
In the same ruka, a young man from the community will share his knowledge about the Palín, an ancient Mapuche game. The program concludes with the transfer to a house in the rural sectors of the community where the visitor will be welcomed for dinner and accommodation.
Day 2
After a country breakfast, the local guide will pick up and transfer the visitor by car to the Villarrica National Park, where there will be a trek through a Patagonian Andean forest with the presence of Araucarias. The walk is full day and has a medium difficulty.
During the adventure the guide will perform an interpretation of the territory in various aspects: Geology, flora, fauna and migrations, as well as other local concepts. Lunch will be held in the commune of Carilafken, on the slopes of the Lanín volcano, the highest summit of the Araucanía with 3,747 meters above sea level. This will be a point of food and rest where you can enjoy wonderful views of the mountains and volcanoes. After lunch the return will begin to arrive at the end of the afternoon to a family house and have dinner.
Day 3
The local guide will pick up visitors and transfer them by car to Loncofilo where the homeowner will present his experience working with sheep, breeding methods, wool, etc. The visit will continue with the craft workshop of one of his daughters, who prepares his work with the same wool of the field.
Later they will go to Trakurra where they will be received by an ancestral authority of the Camilo Coñequir indigenous community, who will share the history of the territory. His wife will prepare lunch based on the traditional Mapuche cuisine with produce from local orchards and fruits of the native forest. After lunch, a workshop on honey-derived products with natural herbs will be visited in the same community.
The day continues with the visit to an initiative of a young Mapuche who collects forest seeds for reproduction and reforestation with native species, in the upper area of the Carileufu River. The nursery, the garden and part of the forest in regeneration will be visited. The day will end at a family home in the community for dinner and rest.
Day 4
We leave Curarrehue to move to Melipeuco. After breakfast, the tour of the Maichín river will begin and the impressive Malalco jump will be visited. The journey will continue through the same valley to Reigolil, where visitors will be greeted by a Kimche, a person with vast ancestral knowledge, who will explain part of the Mapuche worldview and continue the journey to Melipeuco for the end of the day, dinner and rest.
Day 5
After breakfast they will move to the Conguillío National Park, where the Sierra Nevada trekking will be done, accompanied by a local guide. The circuit stands out for the quality of its Patagonian Andean forest and the panoramic views of the Llaima volcano and Lake Conguillío. The araucaria, one of the most primitive trees on the planet, is present in much of the walk.
Lunch at the trail viewpoint and then return to Melipeuco to end the day with dinner and overnight.
Day 6
After a peasant breakfast, Melipeuco will be left to move to Icalma (in Mapuzungun “water mirror”). A few meters from the border with Argentina, you will receive a local guide, who will take you to Batea Mahuida, an ancient volcano that has its access managed by the Pehuenche communities of the sector. The group will reach its plateau where there is a spectacular view of Argentine and Chilean lakes. The ascent is done by vehicle and its entry is conditioned by the weather and snow conditions.
Lunch will be in Icalma and later the local guide Pehuenche will present the history of the place through paintings. Surrounding the lake visitors will meet an innovator of woodworking and will dine and stay in a house of the Pehuenche community, immersed in an ancient forest of Araucarias.
Day 7
After breakfast, the trip continues to the commune of Lonquimay, arriving at the home of a Longko, ancestral authority, who will give a talk about the traditional medicine of the Mapuche people and show their orchard of medicinal herbs.
The tour continues to Quilquén, the historic Pehuenche commune of the territory, where local people will receive them for lunch. In the afternoon, the local Quilquén guide will lead you along a path in the middle of millenary Araucarias to later dine and stay in a community cabin overlooking the Galletué lagoon.
